We are a duo of researchers working to expose the full degree of harm AI brings to the planet.

However, IH8.AI is also a labour of love: we want to highlight the goodness that AI misses, the pieces of often retro technology that enable human connection, rather than replacing it with an AI chatbot or a "replica" of a human.

We want to make information about AI open to all, clear to readers and understandable no matter the level of complexity and depth they desire to engage with the AI issues.

Our Story

We are a research and artwork team who have been educated in writing, photography, computer science and cybersecurity (with a focus on AI and deepfakes), and ancient Latin and Greek philosophy, literature, and linguistics. We have studied, one of us to doctorate level, at the top tier of the UK's universities (yes University of Oxford, yes UCL, yes Royal College of Art). We have presented at international conferences, given workshops at hacking conferences, and advised various governmental departments on the threats that AI poses (specifically in the VAWG domain).

We have been sadly disappointed by the responses (or lack thereof!) that national and international governance has given to the explosive rise of AI, and in particular the lack of effective regulatory bounds applied to the spread of AI. This lack of regulation has enabled a flurry of inbreeding AI-slop ecosystems to proliferate across the web, to the degree that we had to put down what we were doing at DefyAbuse.org and attack the problem head-on. Unfortunately, the AI problem is greater than just VAWG.
